First Friday Night of most Months
Our revived Beer & Cheese Nights... in Tritton Hall (Hut 44, Addison Rd Community Centre), generally on the first Friday Night of each month. Now that the weather's warmed up, get along and bring a song or two (at least vaguely matching the theme!). There are lots of good old songs from our traditions - and the "theme" just makes us do a bit of research for the right ones.
I would hope more of our own Club would be keen to learn – practise – perform some good old songs from our traditions.
$4 for members / $5 non members
Back in the bad old days, it was "Ladies bring a plate - Gents bring a bottle"... but we know better nowadays. Just for starters we want something edible on the plate - and a decent drop in the bottle!
To keep the brains ticking over, here are the three fairly general themes picked as starting points for the next three Beer & Chees Nights in 2008:

Friday 6th June: Women & Song/Women's Song

Well, we have been accused of singing all about blokes - shearers - drovers - bushrangers - etcetera... so let's look more closely at the other half of our society!

Friday 4th July: Australian Nautical Songs - and what happened to them...

That's a hint about the way that many of the nautical songs 'spat the anchor' and re-rigged themselves as droving... shearing... & songs - but you will be expected to show a knowledge of both forms of the song(s)! As well, it's worth looking at the ways that boats, coastal steamers, ferries, punts and rafts plied their trade in the colonial era!

Friday 1st August: Rad Trad

I see that we also ran this one up the flagpole back in the Bicentennial Year (1988) seeing how the folk and poets had reacted to past colonial and political games. With new governments at all levels strutting about in the latest from the 'Emperor's New Suit' tailoring firm, it's about time we cleaned some of the rust off these songs with a conscience!
