Beer and Cheese Nights
Our revived Beer & Cheese Nights...
in Tritton Hall (Hut 44, Addison Rd Community Centre),
generally on the first Friday Night of each month.
Now that the weather's warmed up, get along and bring a song or two
(at least vaguely matching the theme!).
There are lots of good old songs from our traditions -
and the "theme" just makes us do a bit of research for the right ones.
I would hope more of our own Club would be keen to learn – practise – perform
some good old songs from our traditions.
Back in the bad old days, it was "Ladies bring a plate - Gents bring a bottle"...
but we know better nowadays.
Just for starters we want something edible on the plate - and a decent drop in the bottle!
To keep the brains ticking over, here are the three fairly general themes picked as
starting points for the last three Beer & Chees Nights in 2008:
Friday 5th August: Weather... or Not?
We've had a few broad suggestions that weather is something to be ignored at our peril.
What do we find in the old songs and verse?
Friday 2nd September: A Long Way from (at) Home
It's one of the basic tenets of the Australian (Colonial) experience that everyone with a white skin was a
long way from home and accustomed comforts (and culture & songs!)
Friday 7th October: Convict Days and Convict Ways
The great divide between the lot in uniforms (and/or fancy dress) and the rest who they ruled. This has
shaped the Australian psyche ... and certainly informs our culture.
Song and verse from traditions ... memories ... or plots?
